BANKERS INSTITUTE OF THE PHILIPPINES (BAIPHIL)
BAIPhil 25th National Convention
The Manor, Camp John Hay, Baguio City
13-15 March 2009
OPENING MESSAGE OF LYDIA C. KING, BAIPHIL PRESIDENT
“Quest for Banking Excellence.”
SEC Chair – Fe Barin, Distinguished Guests, Fellow BAIPhil members, Ladies and Gentlemen, Good afternoon.
At no other time in history has excellence in banking been more important than now. As we start our 25th National Convention, the world continues to witness great changes unfolding in the corporate world, brought about largely by the banking industry. All these serve as a timely reminder for us at BAIPhil to never give up our quest to continuously strengthen our banks, and find ways to transform our challenges into opportunities.
Since its inception, BAIPhil has fulfilled a unique responsibility to the economy and society at large. Today, our responsibility is much greater because the challenges are equally bigger. As such, we have to make sure that our banks are staffed with people who have the right skills and the right values in place so that they are always ready to respond to the challenges of the global economy. We also have to make sure that they never lose sight of our mandate, by constantly reminding them of our ongoing quest for banking excellence.
In 2009, we should continue to be of relevant support to the Philippine banking industry, especially in the areas of training and research, services, organizational leadership, and membership. We must harness these strengths and translate them into results. We must continue to enhance our expertise and extend our network. We realize that strengthening each part of our organization will further add to BAIPhil’s collective strength.
Despite the challenges of the global financial meltdown, we cannot afford to simply focus on the here and now. We have to look forward and prepare ourselves for greater challenges down the roadspawned by globalization, technological advances, new regulations and changing consumer habits. Change is imminent. These should impel BAIPhil to remain dynamic. We must keep pace with these changes and respond with effective research, education, and training.
Above all, we have to promote and espouse good corporate governance. Banking is built on trust and integrity. It is our responsibility to help preserve this foundation and ensure that public confidence in us remains strong.
To do so, we must continue to communicate to our publics. Our stakeholders have to know that we, as an institution, are committed to continually strengthening our banking system so that we may stand strong in the face of economic uncertainty. Our message should be resoundingly clear and should embody all that BAIPhil strives for and is committed to do. It should be consistent with our ideals and should be so distinct that when one hears it, one automatically thinks of BAIPhil.
We have thus proposed that BAIPhil adopts the tagline “Quest for Banking Excellence.” This tagline, we believe, eloquently captures what we aspire to do. The tagline “Quest for Banking Excellence” complements our brand name Bankers Institute of the Philippines, Inc., which connotes leadership as an organization that is a premier school for bankers in the country.
The tagline “Quest for Banking Excellence” is also a powerful branding tool. A brand is a commitment and by adopting that tagline, we are in fact giving more value to our brand. The tagline captures and expresses our organization’s most important goal, which is excellence in banking.
This can only complement our efforts to continually push for excellence in banking, which will be our rallying cry throughout our 25th National Convention. I am confident that through this, we can turn our challenges into opportunities for growth.
Thank you.
